Adding incremental file reference number

dear all,
i have created this report that i run daily using the runReport from the birt runtime. however, i now need to have a dataitem in the report that increments everytime the report runs which is suppose to be every day.
How can i have a data item that increment everytime i run the report.
0001 then 002, 003 ...............

You'd probably have to keep track of this value outside of BIRT somewhere and bring it in as a parameter and display the parameter in the report.

Thanks for the quick reply,
at the moment i am using date as a way of incrementing the value every day because i should be running the report every day. having yesterday as a fixed date in the report and using DateTimeSpan.day to return the integer.
How can i keep track of the number outsite the report? i mean how can i make sure that it only increments when i run the report with the runtime runReport.bat file?

You could probably set up an output stream of some sort in your script and write to a text file the value that you're currently at, then you'd just have to read this value in each time from the text file.
