Changing Existing Report Itens functionality

Is it possible to create a plugin wich will extend an existing Report Item, like "Label", and for example change its value for another one in run-time.

Obs.: i already know how to create a new report item, but what i wanna do is change one item that already exists in birt.

Probably the easiest thing to do is get the BIRT source, copy the plugins for the report item you want to extend, rename it something else, and add in your new functionality.
