Hierarchy report

Hi

I am trying to find the best way to represent a hierarchy in a BIRT report.

Basically, I have data which has id and parentId.
I want to show all the parents up in the tree(stop, when parentId is null) and children of a particular id.

Can you help me out?

Are there a limited number of levels? Or are the levels dynamic?

Hi

For one of my reports, I can display a limited number of levels but for another report, I would need to display all the levels.

Please suggest for both.

P.S. If need arises, I am ready to use Java code also.

If you know how many levels, you can use embedded tables with the appropriate amount of embedded tables to cover your levels. Then, it's a matter of filtering your data in your tables to be under the correct parent in the outer table. When you get into a dynamic number of levels, this won't work and the task gets much tougher to create a solution for.

If you have a dynamic number of levels, it's a matter of getting the level in the dataset. You can than build a crosstab on it with the level as 1 of the dimensions.

If your dataset is an SQL query, then this shouldn't be a problem.
So is your dataset an SQL query?
And if so, what database are you on?

Yes, I am using a query to get the data.
I am using the salesforce database.

Any hints, for unlimited levels?

In Oracle a hierarchical query looks like this: 
 
<pre class='_prettyXprint _lang-auto _linenums:0'>SELECT child_id,
parent_id,
LEVEL
FROM parent_child_table
START WITH child_id = <your_id>
CONNECT BY PRIOR parent_id = child_id</pre>
 
Maybe if you post this query in a salesforce forum, someone can translate it for you?
