Edit and save rptdocument

Is there a way to edit and save(update) a rptdocument in Birt?

The original problem here is i can retrieve information such as page number from a rptdocument but enable to update/set the report parameter with the page number i retrieved. It should be working if i update the original rptdesign file of the rptdocument but it will take a long time to regenerate the report (2nd time) to get the updated rptdocument.
