I have just a logs dir on my source host...but a logs\otherdirs on my target...why does this want to try and delete my \logs\otherdirs directories on my target

Can you tell me how to exclude...

or
<excludePattern regex="\.[\\/]logs.*$"/>

You were anchoring the beginning of the pattern match on "logs" but the entry is ".\logs"

If you want to exclude any directory path with a "cache" directory in it, then your regex is: "\cache\"

I really think you need to stop worrying about the ^ and $ anchors.
the pattern "^.*[\\/]cache[\\/].*$" is the same thing as "[\\/]cache[\\/]"

If you want it in one, try "[\\/]cache([\\/].*)*$"

If you want to match any paths that contain a directory called 'cache', use this match:

(^|[\\\/])cache([\\\/]|$)

If for some reason the path has spaces at the beginning or end, you'll want to modify it to be:

(^\s*|[\\\/])cache([\\\/]|\s*$)

Which will actually work whether there are spaces or not.
