Space Used by Editions
DanBCBSM
We've found that deleting editions recovers very little, if any, space. I suppose this is because the editions we have deleted do not include very many file changes. Any comments?

Deleting editions doesn't buy you jack.
An edition is a collection of references to older versions of you site.
If you want to recover space, there are sections in the manual and devnet articles that talk about limited ways to do it.
To recover a majority of used space, make a new branch, teamsite move the old STAGING area, test the heck of of it, and them delete the old branch.

This is not really true.

This is true.
If any version of a file is referenced only by the edition to be deleted and no other areas, then that version of the file will be removed when that edition is removed.
There are a lot of other details. As you mention, there is existing documentation that explains in great detail what happens when editions are deleted.
