Creating multiple groups in a table
riyaz_itls
Hi,

I have a dataset returning the following:

Month Customer Operation Count
Jun2011 Cust_1 Add 100
Jun2011 Cust_1 Update 200
Jun2011 Cust_2 Add 50
Jun2011 Cust_2 Update 150
Aug2011 Cust_1 Add 70
Aug2011 Cust_1 Update 110
Aug2011 Cust_2 Add 40
Aug2011 Cust_2 Update 30

Now I need to create a report which gives the following output

Group_1 Group_2 Operation Count
Jun2011
MonthSummary
Add 150
Update 350
Cust_1
Add 100
Update 200
Cust_2
Add 50
Update 150
Aug2011
MonthSummary
Add 110
Update 140
Cust_1
Add 70
Update 110
Cust_2
Add 40
Update 30

In short I need to create a table with two subgroups:
- one group on month (master group)
- subgroup on Operation only
- subgroup on Customer + Operation

Is this possible with BIRT

Yes. You'd just group your table on Month, then group it on Customer, then group it on Operation. This would create the above layout you're wanting. Just make sure the groups are in that order and then you'll have group headers and footers that you can do summations and group title information, etc.

Thanks for your response Michael.
group-by(Month, Customer, Operation) is one of the grouping that is required. But how do i get the monthsummary which is a group-by(Month, Operation).

My previous example was a bit vague. Below is another example.
The report in this example needs to do the following:
- group-by[Month]
- sub-group-by[Operation]
- sub-group-by[Customer, Operation]
- sub-group-by[Application, Operation]

DataSet Result:
Month Customer Application Operation Count
Jun2011 Cust_1 App_1 Add 100
Jun2011 Cust_1 App_1 Update 100
Jun2011 Cust_1 App_2 Add 100
Jun2011 Cust_1 App_2 Update 100
Jun2011 Cust_2 App_1 Add 100
Jun2011 Cust_2 App_1 Update 100
Jun2011 Cust_2 App_2 Add 100
Jun2011 Cust_2 App_2 Update 100
Aug2011 Cust_1 App_1 Add 50
Aug2011 Cust_1 App_1 Update 50
Aug2011 Cust_1 App_2 Add 50
Aug2011 Cust_1 App_2 Update 50
Aug2011 Cust_2 App_1 Add 50
Aug2011 Cust_2 App_1 Update 50
Aug2011 Cust_2 App_2 Add 50
Aug2011 Cust_2 App_2 Update 50
Expected Report Output:
Month BreakDown_Type BreakDown Operation Count
Jun2011
Summary
Add 400
Update 400
Customer Breakdown
Cust_1
Add 200
Update 200
Cust_2
Add 200
Update 200
Application Breakdown
App_1
Add 200
Update 200
App_2
Add 200
Update 200
Aug2011

From the looks of it, you're probably going to have to do embedded tables to get this kind of grouping. I can create an example if you'd like.

Thanks Michael.
An example would be very very helpful. Can you create one?

Ok. The attached report will do what you're looking for with embedded tables and filters on those tables. I use your data from the above post in a CSV file, which is in the zip file attached. You will need to change the location of the flat file in the dataSource to wherever you save the file and it should run. Let me know if you have questions.

In the count column values are repeating ..you can suppress that value by clicking on table and then count column and then in properties check on suppress duplicate..so that you will not get duplicate vales..

How can I open this file on BIRT 2.5 Version? Can you upload a RPT which is compatible with 2.5Ver.
Thanks in advance.
Try going to the XML Source and changing the version info lines to match those from your version and see if you can open it. If not, I'll make a quick sample in 2.5.
