Programmatically change sort within group using JavaScript

I'm using BIRT with IBM Rational Tools Version 7.1.0.02

I have a report paramater allowing the user to select the sort by column and I would like to change the selected value programmatically using JavaScript. The sort by column is within a group. Does anyone know how to do this?
