Any rptdocument as datasource

We have a requirement to use 8 rptdocs as datasource.

So I create a design with 8 connections, 8 datasets and use a grid to display required values from those 8 rptdocs but is there a better way to do this?

Let's assume that these 8 rptdocs will have a specific data column binding with pre-processed data (Bookmarked items doesn't appear to work in BIRT 2.3.2 when using rptdocument as source) which the generic design have to read and display.

Is it possible to define 1 connection and use event scripting to loop through the rptdocs list? Can the same logic be applied to datasets? The resultset metadata will be different per rptdoc but this specific data column will be available. Note we are using BIRT 2.3.2.

I'm trying to make this design a generic one rather than a fixed design to work with 8 rptdocs as datasource...

Any pointers will be of great help.
