Question on BIRT ExcelLayoutEngine.java
torjoshi
Hi,
I am using BIRT 2.6 with JDK1.6. Trying to generate an Excel output for a BIRT report. The report contains chart and tabular data. The tabular data is exported, however the chart does not, instead the chart space in Excel is marked by a large white cell. I reviewed the code for the BIRT engine, and in the class ExcelLayoutEngine.java, noticed lines
if ( data.getDataType( ) == SheetData.IMAGE )
{
addEmptyData( data, container );
}
And I fail to see why the data would be emptied on an image. Any reason, why the data is emptied on an image?
PS: Tried using Tribix 2.5.2, report exports well for small data, however for large data sets, the emitter crashes with OutOfMemoryException.
Are there other Excel emitters for BIRT?
Thanks.

You are totally right:
The Excel standard emitter does not export image files to the excel files. All images embedded into a report (and charts as well because they are just image files) would just produce a empty cell in the excel file. I don't know about the reason for not exporting images to excel, but it's the way how the standard emitter for excel works.
I don't know of any other emitter besides Tribix.

The Tribix emitter will do images and charts at the expense of having extra rows and columns inserted at various locations. The commercial BIRT product has an emitter built on top of eSpreadsheet that works very well, and has several other features besides chart (and native chart support) and image support. There is another comapany called Arctorus (
http://www.arctorus.com/)
that created some emitters that provide Office 2007 support. And we have written an Excel emitter that does charts and images, and outputs to the smaller Office binary format, however I cannot release it since it is provided to out clients, and I am not sure what the legal grounds on that are on that.

Unfortunately we cannot use Arctorus since we need to support customers with versions prior to Office 2007.
Thank you for your reply cbrell and jasonw for your response.

There are two new Excel emitters that you might like to look at:<br />
<ul class='bbc'><li><a class='bbc_url' href='
http://www.spudsoft.co.uk/?p=424'>SpudSoft</a>
; (aka mine)</li><li><a class='bbc_url' href='
http://code.google.com/a/eclipselabs.org/p/native-excel-emitter-birt-plugin/downloads/list'>Ramesh</a></li></ul>
;
<br />
Mine (SpudSoft) does XLS and XLSX with images and without blank rows/columns, but it uses POI so it does have to build a complete model of the spreadsheet in memory.
