BIRT Temporary files under WebSphere
KenNCSU
We have been using BIRT in in Web based mode for quite a while. Since the very start we have had the problem that we have to change the permissions of the directory under WebSphere where BIRT writes it's temporary files.
This is what the directory looks like after changing the permissions and successfully running a report:
drwxr-xr-x 3 csusr sysadm1 256 Sep 19 15:06 org.eclipse.core.runtime
drwxr-xr-x 3 csusr sysadm1 256 Sep 19 15:06 org.eclipse.equinox.app
drwxr-xr-x 4 csusr sysadm1 256 Sep 19 15:06 org.eclipse.osgi
drwxr-xr-x 2 csusr sysadm1 256 Sep 19 15:06 org.eclipse.update
This directory is: /usr/IBM/AppServer/profiles/AppSrv01/installedApps/[machine-cell]/reportEAR.ear/Report_Web.war/WEB-INF/platform/configuration The above files/directories are not there before the report is run.
if the permissions are not opened then we get:
+ error.CannotStartupOSGIPlatform e
I attempted to set the osgi.configuration.area=./reports/properties/config property in the config.ini, but this seems to have no effect. The goal here was to make BIRT write its files to some other directory rather than deep in the heart of WebSphere.
We use BIRT in a webreport type configuration. So we don't start the Report Engin ourselves.
How do we make BIRT write its files to a specified location??

Can you try a full path for the configuration area?

On my PC I used a full path: C:\birt_2_6_2 it did not honor it at all. That is now temporary files show up in that directory.
On the unix box the config.ini must be part of the deployment so a relative path would have to be used because we would not be sure of where a particular clients WebSphere was installed.
So our osgi.configuration.area=./reports/properties/config would be relative to... Birt Home?

It did not honor it? I tried on my local machine and the files got written in the full path location that I specified. I had to create the directory though. Can you try a full path on the unix box as a test?

This worked. But there still is a problem. We cannot know for certain what directory the target machine will have. Is there a way to have the config.ini outside of the deployment and make the BIRT engine find the config.ini?
We package up our system and it gets installed as a WebSphere application. So the config.ini is buried deep inside the deployment.

You could use BIRT 3.7, which should not be writting out the osgi data.
