Since it is relatively easy to work with databases in BIRT, I can suggest you looking at <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.joeconway.com/plr/'>PL/R extension</a> of <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.postgresql.org/'>PostgreSQL</a> database, combining existing conectivity support with R statistical capabilities.
