Using Iw_include to promote code re-use

Gidday all,

What I want to be able to do is create a file of frequently used Perl subroutines.
And call them from each presentation template.

I just can't get it to work.

I use iw_include to include my file

<iw_include file='/default/main/wwwschools/WORKAREA/schoolsdev/templatedata/schools/components/perlScripts.tpl' mode='cwd'/>

So here is the call to my subroutine from my master tpl

<iw_perl><![CDATA[
my $message = format_Message("Hello","World");

iwpt_output("<h1>$message</h1>");

]]></iw_perl>

And here is the contents of my file which I would like to include.
Has anyone had any success with this sort of thing, Im sure its possible, it would help to improve our templating.

sub format_Message{

my ($message1, $message2) = @_;

return $message1." ".$message2;

}

I'm not sure why it's not working - and I don't have time right now to try testing it out to see if I can reproduce and/or resolve the issue (sorry) - but I did want to suggest, that if you are using such simplistic code as you posted that you change the return statement from:

return $message1." ".$message2;
to
return "$message1 $message2";

I'm not sure how the former will get interpreted - but the latter is definitiely returning a single string.

<iw_include> is for inlining another PT's output, not for importing arbitrary Perl subroutines. For that, you should use Perl's native facility, "use" (or "require"). Note that since the code you are importing appears to be in your workarea, you will have to dynamically adjust the Perl runtime's search path.

Yes I would suggest using perl modules.
Type __IW_HOME__/iw-perl/bin/perldoc perlmod for more information

if you decide to go with iw_include, make sure your perl code is wrapped around the appropriate tags
<iw_perl><![CDATA[ perl code ]]> </iw_perl>
But its really not the favourable approach.

(side-note)
You don't need all the CDATA tags if you don't try to make the PT XML-compliant (haven't needed to since 5.0.x).

I.e. instead of:
<?xml ...?>
<iw_pt name="...">
...
</iw_pt>

Just do:
<iw_pt name="..."/>
