how user can control DCR's preview?

I saw FormAPI can provide events in control onSave event for DCRs; Does 'Preview' or 'Generate' have simlar API? Does anyway exists that without using template files, user can make the preview or generate in their own way? But assume that 'Preview' or 'Generate' button is pressed.
