You are correct. They won't appear there because the html runs on the client side.

If they don't need to be active, you could use images. If they need to be able to be changed, you're likely looking at adding a new palette item and changing source of emitters.

Clement Wong reminded me that you could use a font like Wingdings2 or something similar to place a check box that will export to XLS. It won't be interactive, however.
