I have a table with three fields:
String name
Double severity
Double tally

What I need to report on is the following:
Criteria 1) (severity > 2 and severity < 4) and Tally > 10
Criteria 2) severity = 4
Criteria 3) severity = 5

With these criteria, I need to count the number of times a name and criteria occur
i.e. name, severity, tally
bob, 5, 1
bob, 4, 1
bob, 4, 3
bob, 4, 2
bob, 5, 1
sally, 2, 12
sally, 3, 2
sally, 3, 20


Would result in:
name, criteria_matched, count
bob, 3, 2
bob, 2, 3
sally, 1, 2

I tried to use the attached example I found in the devshed to get me started but I am having mixed results in what I get back.
Is there a better way to do this?

I dont think you need a scripted data set to do that.

There are several ways to do it. The easiest I can think of is using a few levels of grouping, and adding aggregations to count. So if you added grouping like (Name -> Severity -> Tally) you could add counts at each level, delete the detail section of the table, and display your results in the table/group summary.

Another option is to have a table with a filter for each criteria. Then, you only need to count the names.

And a final option would be to have a hidden table that populates a ArrayList or HashMap, and just do your calculations off the hash map.

Those should all work. But its hard to know for sure since in the numbers on your last example are really unclear.
