using global javascript functions in a chart

hi how can i use global javascript functions in a chart event? 
 
i have a js file: birt-functions.js which i added via resource tab into the report 
 
in can use my functions in a dynamic text but when im use it in a chart event i get an error: ReferenceError: "myFunc" is not defined 
 
after few hours i found a solution

1. create a global variable with the function: 
reportContext.setPersistentGlobalVariable("myFunc", myFunc); 
 
2. use it in a chart event: 
function beforeDrawAxisLabel( axis, label, icsc ) 
{ 
myFunc = icsc.getExternalContext().getScriptable().getPersistentGlobalVariable("myFunc"); 
 
label.getCaption().setValue(myFunc(20)); 
} 
 
but its annoying to create a global variable for each javascript function. 
 
have someone a better idea for global js functions?

The error is saying that it tries to persist an Object that is yet non serializable. The object that it tries to serialize is the javascript function.
Persistent global variable are global variables that are serialized to the rptdocument file (as you might know there are two different models that can be used to generate a report. Persistent global variables are beeing used in the two phases model where run and render are executed by two different tasks. This means that a global variable that is created in task 1 (the create task) is not visible (it doesn't even exist) in task 2 (the render task). This is why you use persistent global variables:
Persistent global variables can be created in task 1 and are serialized to a file together with it's value. The time you run task 2 it deserializes the value from the file so that you can use this variable in task 2.

You might want to just create a global variable using reportContext.setGlobalVariable
persistent global variables only work with java objects that are serializable (primitive types and some objects)

but how can i use global js functions without PGV? i use them in the create and render task

you have to to register the function using your approach in the initialize event. This event is called as first action in both phases. So you can be sure that the function is available in run and in render.

PGVs only make sense if you want to persist a certain value. The function itself is static...correct? Or does it need to persist some internal states?

your initial question is very interesting. I faced this problem multiple times. I ll see if i find some nice solution and come back to you.
I would be interested in how others solved the problem.

Normally i m working with external js files and i place all the code to register the functions using the reportContext at the end of the js file (which is a crappy workaround)
