Adding gradient to background of entire table?

Hello,

I wish to add a background of a color gradient to my table. I wanted to do this in CSS but BIRT does not support CSS3 validation, and it seems like you can't do gradient in CSS2. Also, if I were to just use an image as a background, how do I make it so that the image spans the entire table, instead of being a background for each cell?

Oops, what I mean is for the background to span the entire section of a cross-tab, not cells.
