generate 2 pages from one dcr

nico

Just wondering if anyone has options for my dilema. I've got my writers generating a web page and a printable web page from one dcr. They choose one of the two tpls to generate the desired page.
However we now know that we want both generated each time so the additional step is redundant. Has anyone built some sort of solution where they click the generate button save and name the file what they want (probably the tricky part) and it creates both pages?

Thanks.

Nico-
What we've done is take the printer-friendly tpl out of templating.cfg, so it doesn't show as an option for the user. Then call on iwpt_compile.ipl in the main tpl to auto-generate the printer-friendly version when the web page gets generated.

However, we had predictible file names. You're right, generating with unique names could be the tricky part.

Haven't actually done this, but it shouldn't be that bad. Getting the file name for the "print" page would be the trickiest part, but I would suggest adopting some kind of business rule naming convention, like the name of the web file with an _print added on, so if they're generating a.html, the print version would be a_print.html. Then, withing your tpl, you could simply call iwgen using a system call with an <iwperl> tag to generate the print version. Alternatively, you could use iw_ostream stuff, but I think that's probably more trouble than its worth for what you're trying to do.

Hope this helps somewhat,

Nico -
I have done same kind of stuffs. Refer the below sample codes. Include these code with your tpl files

<iw_perl> <![CDATA[

use TeamSite::Config;
my $iwhome = TeamSite::Config::iwgethome();
my $dcr_name = iwpt_get_dcr_name();
my $tpl_name = iwpt_get_pt_name();

my $output_file = iwpt_get_ofile_name();
$output_file =~ s/\/.iwmnt//g;

my $checkprr = index($output_file, "_prr.html");

if ($checkprr >= 0) {

} else {
$output_file =~ s/.html/_prr.html/g;
chomp($output_file);
my $cmd = $iwhome."/bin/iwgen -t $tpl_name -r $dcr_name $output_file";
`$cmd`;
}

]]></iw_perl>

If you can find out more reliable way, send that sample code across to me.

ok so if i simply want to append "_print.asp" to the end of the 2nd generated page what would all the source look like?

Thanks,
Nico

nico

Can I see an example of the tpl you use to achieve this?

Thanks,
Nico

It's actually pretty simple. Your tpl looks normal, then just insert something like this somewhere between iw_perl tags...
my $printer_friendly = `/opt/iw-home/bin/iwpt_compile.ipl -pt $vpath/$tplpath/PRINTER_FRIENDLY.tpl -iw_include-location $vpath -ofile $vpath/PATH/TO/PRINTER/FRIENDLY/FILENAME_print.html`;

...actually, now that I think about it, in our version we didn't need the dcr, you'll have to add that to the above code. But then, you could probably use iwgen... I think that might keep the extended attributes, where as iwpt_compile doesn't...
Instead, put this between iw_perl tags...
my $template = iwpt_get_pt_name();
my $dcr= iwpt_get_dcr_name();
#these will return a full path (from iwmnt), so work with them to get them down to the paths below...
my $printer_friendly = `iwgen -t templatedata..../..../PRINTER_FRIENDLY.tpl -r templatedata/.../.../DCR /PATH/TO/OUTPUT/PRINTER_FRIENDLY_FILE.html `;

Good luck!

This worked great but it just spits out 2 pages of one tpl. What I need is one dcr to spit out one page from pr.tpl and printable.tpl.

So where in the code do you specify that you want the printable version to use printable.tpl? I tried this but it didn't work, sorry my perl sucks.

I'm using the code below in my generic presentation template. It generates the additional file in the format filename_pfv.asp, but it contains no content, i.e. none of the dct information.

Am I missing something.?

<iw_perl>
<![CDATA[
use TeamSite::Config;
my $dcr_name = iwpt_get_dcr_name();
my $tpl_name = "templatedata/isp_global_intranet/printable/presentation/default.tpl";
my $output_file = iwpt_get_ofile_name();
$output_file =~ s/\/.iwmnt//g;
my $checkpfv = index($output_file, "_pfv.asp");

if ($checkpfv >= 0) {

} else {
$output_file =~ s/.asp/_pfv.asp/g;
chomp($output_file);
my $cmd = `iwgen -t $tpl_name -r $dcr_name $output_file`;
}

]]>
</iw_perl>

Try something like this...
$tpl_pr = templatedata/...pr.tpl";
$tpl_print = "templatedata.../printable.tpl";
$pr_file = "pr.html";
$print_file = "print.html";
my $cmd = $iwhome."/bin/iwgen -t $tpl_pr -r $dcr_name $pr_file";
my $cmd = $iwhome."/bin/iwgen -t $tpl_print -r $dcr_name $print_file";

I needed to add two extra lines to get this working:

$dcr_name =~ s/\/.iwmnt//g;
$tpl_name =~ s/\/.iwmnt//g;

Hi,
In addition to:
$output_file =~ s/.html/_prr.html/g;
I also did:
$tpl_name =~ s/.tpl/_prr.tpl/g;
which causes the Generator to use HomePage_prr.tpl
The problem is, I got the following in /var/adm/iwui/error_log:

"/default/main/lgaqDev/herveybay/WORKAREA/common/templatedata/councilInternet/CouncilHomePage/presentation/HomePage_prr.tpl: does not have a configured filename extension"

So in templating.cfg, I added an additional <template> tag alongside the original HomePage.tpl reference in the <data-type> for that data type.
This fixed the problem, but now when I generate the page, I have to choose from two Presentation templates.
I do not want people to choose HomePage_prr.tpl; what choices do I have?
Thanks!
John

If you use iwgen - the PT needs to be listed in the templating.cfg file.
If you use iwpt_compile.ipl - the PT does not need to be listed in the templating.cfg file - but you have to manually apply the TeamSite Templating / FormsPublisher EAs to the generated files so that if anyone tries to edit them they get taken to the DCR instead of editing the generated HTML

The code works great - thanks for the post. On a related note, if I want to save the second output file in a different folder, is it possible? I also tried invoking the move command (mv) and it doesn't work either. Is there any other way? Thanks.

I finally got wise and scrapped all the perl for css and placed it in one tpl. Now there is only one tpl that both view in a browser perfectly and prints perfectly without having to generalte 2 seperate pages.
