Updating Oracle Tables for iServer
JoeO
Hello,
We are converting a few hundred users and a few hundred roles to BIRT (Actuate 11) from a legacy version. Is there any documentation or advice you can give that I can send to my IT department to mass create the user and/or role populations in the AC_URUP tables with Oracle, as opposed to creating them one at a time on the iServer Management Console?
Thanks,
-Joe

Hi Joe,
What version of Actuate iServer are you upgrading from?
JoeO
Actuate 8 e.Rreports (Squirrel database); however, we are changing our security model and have our users and roles already stored in Oracle for use with other components of our website. We would like to leverage that population on the iServer to get us started.

BIRT iServer has a flexible security model. Out-of-the-box it comes with the security model where users and roles are stored in an internal database. You can also externalize the security by writing an extension and seems like that might work well for your needs. You can read more about the security extension model (known as RSSE) in chapter 10 of this document:

Thanks, I can forward this along to my IT department, but I think that we would be more interested in a solution that can be applied to the "Out-of-the-box" security model since we already have a large portion of our report design transition completed and it relies on data row security.
Is there any documentation on the internal database? I may be oversimplifying but, I would want to create an insert query on the AC_URUP_AC_ROLE and AC_URUP_AC_USER tables and then create the association of USER_IID and ROLE_IID in some other table(s)? Any thoughts on a solution like this?
Thanks again,
-Joe

Joe,
While it is technically possible to perform those actions, it is strongly suggested to never modify the metadata database without very good need and Actuate Support assisting directly in the process.
Given that information, what can be done is something akin to the following:
Set up a program (C#, Java, VB) that will read certain information from the rows in your Oracle database.
This information can then be passed in as values for functions in the Information Delivery API that allows you to interact with the iServer to create or modify users.
If you are starting with a fresh installation, you would use the following:
CreateUser
CreateRole
UpdateRole
UpdateUser
This will allow for the basics of adding all your users, adding all the roles, and then updating the roles with any parent child relationships that need to be adjusted, and then finally updating the users with all the appropriate roles as well.
