Deploying BIRT in Jboss in a EAR

I currently have an EAR file that has BIRT inside of it in the application/APP-INF/platform directory. This was working for us using Geronimo. We are now trying to deploy our app to Jboss and I'm getting a CannotStartupOSGIPlatform exception. Is it possible to deploy BIRT into Jboss in an ear using the directory structure I have above? For our BIRT_HOME we set it to /APP-INF/platform. 
 
I have read a lot of posts saying that you need to packaged BIRT up into the WAR file portion of the EAR. Is that the only way to do that in Jboss? I have pasted the exception below. Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you using BIRT 3.7.2?

Jason,
I knew I left out some key info. We are using BIRT version 2.6.2. We are also using the ReportEngine class. Also if I do have to move the runtime to the WAR file what would I set BIRT_HOME to be? Ideally I would like to leave everything the way it is and just set BIRT_HOME to something else but I think it might come down to a class loading issue in Jboss.

So you wrote a servlet using the report engine api? If so are you using the PlatformServletContext? BTW if you use 3.7.2 POJO runtime you do not need to set a home and I do not think it will matter where you put it in the ear.

It is actually an EJB that starts up the ReportEngine. So when the container loads the EJB the ReportEngine starts up. We are not using the PlatformServletContext. Upgrading to 3.7 at this point isn't an option for us.

If you use the PlatformServletContext you should be able to set birt home to "" and make a directory named platform in you web-inf that contains a plugins folder and configuration folder. The plugins folder should contain your birt runtime plugins and the configuration folder should contain your configuration ini file.

Ok. So have you not heard of anyone else starting it from an EJB? This was working in Geronimo and then once we deployed in Jboss it stopped working. I can't really find any good leads on how to fix it. It seems like using the PlatformServletContext might be our only route.

I have not done it but I know others have. The issue is with getting the file location to the plugins. In your EJB do you have access to the ServletContext? If so what does sc.getRealPath("/APP-INF/platform") return. If it returns the correct path you should be able to set birt home to it. Here are the notes from the report engine api primer page on PlatformServletContext:

The IPlatformContext interface describes the methods needed to load the resources required by the BIRT runtime. Within BIRT there are two implementations of this interface, PlatformFileContext() and PlatformServletContext(). The Platform Context is set using the setEngineContext method of the EngineConfig class. If this method is not called it defaults to PlaformFileContext() and uses the Java File API to load the resources. The PlatformServletContext class uses Resource based operations. So if you are deploying an application to the Web that uses the BIRT API and it is not contained in a war you can use the default and set your engine home to something similar to:
config.setEngineHome( servletContext.getRealPath("/WEB-INF"));
The BIRT Viewer application will load the plug-ins from /WEB-INF/Plugins directory. If you deploy your application in a war, setup your code like: //this causes the plug-in loader to look in the current directory.
config.setEngineHome("");

//plug-ins in the WEB-INF/Platform directory. If this directory

I was able to get this from the ServletContext. Based on that what would you assume the BIRT_HOME should be?

You could try setting your home to that directory but because of the war it may not work. It looks like you need to use a PlatformServletContext.

I will trying using that. It seems like it is finding the libraries because the Platform is trying to startup it just cannot for some reason. I cannot really tell what the problem is from the exception either. I dug around in the source code a bit and didn't see anything that stuck out. I will let you know how switching to the PlatformServletContext goes.

So I finally got this figured out. In geronimo it explodes the EAR. This allows you to use code like this <pre class='_prettyXprint _lang-auto _linenums:0'>config.setBIRTHome(getClass().getResource(birtHome).getPath());</pre> to set BIRT_HOME. In Jboss EAP 5.1.2 it doesn't explode the EAR file so the APP-INF directory doesn't exist. I had to deploy the EAR already exploded into Jboss and now everything works like it should. So I didn't have to change anything in our application. Hopefully this will help someone else out who has this issue. Thanks again for all of your help. I appreciate it.
