a problem hogging up the interwoven server space.

kss

Hi.
I have a problem with my tpl template file. I recently received a message from my interwoven administrator saying that I ran some templates last week, and they hogged up 99% of the processor. Could this be a problem with my perl code inside the tpl ? And I wanted to ask - As we "Generate a Page" from a dcr using a template file (tpl) file -- does not the process die when we close the webpage generated ? Or if i am missing something please tell me.
Help will be appreciated.

Yes, I've had the same issue when I'm developing perl in tpl's and in workflow external tasks. Generally, there's a problem in the script that's causing it to loop infinitely.

Funny, I was just going to start a post asking for suggestions. There must be something we can put in perl scripts that kills the process if it loops, say, for an hour? I mean, I make sure my perl is running at the command line, but when you bring it into the gui, it's a different environment, and doesn't always work right away.

Any suggestions on how to handle this -- killing runaway perl scripts that were initiated in the gui?

Thanks,
maureen

Code review - best thing in the world - get someone else who understands the programming language to review your code with an eye towards identifying potential endless loops (in this case).

Look for places where you loop - and insert a counter and a test on that counter to make sure it doesn't exceed some reasonable number e.g.

my $counter = 0;
while ($some_var < $some_other_var){
    $counter++;
    if ($counter > 50){
        die("counter exceeded maximum number of loops!");
    }
    ...
}

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I do think that there is something wrong with my Perl code, but I cannot figure out after reviewing it a lot. I am attaching the main <iw_perl> code for my tpl which populates the left navigation bar in my final html page with data from dcr. I hope if somebody has time can look through the code and suggest me any possible bugs for infinite loops.

Thanks

How about a feature request -- add a parameter to iwconfig that will set the max number of loops?

Adam Stoller

What exactly would such a parameter in iw.cfg control?
The perl code is completely custom - there's nothing specific about the code that should be controlled [OOTB] via iw.cfg.

However, that being said, you can create your own sections and key/value pairs for iw.cfg and you *could* utilize that information within your script to retrieve a "max-loop-value" which you compare against - but ultimately it still comes down to custom code that has to be written correctly - and there's no point in filing a feature request for that...
