Google Map like Maximise/Minimise/Panes Functionality with Birt
Rajan_Arx
We are looking for reporting tool where we can do Google map like interaction like maximise/minimise/Paning
for our Charts.
I can see one navigation when opening the report by BIRT viewer API, but not sure how we can achieve it.
Appreciate your suggestion !!

Can you explain more? You're wanting to be able to zoom in and zoom out and drag side to side to see the other bars? Is this what you're wanting? Let me know. Also, what's your BIRT version?
Rajan_Arx
Hi,
I can explain in detail. Actually Our report needs to show a huge line chart or bar chart which may span to
10000 points. The csv files may be multiple . So what we intentd that during initial load, report can fetch data from few CSV files and when user Clicks on Pane Button, it on demand fetched the additional csv file and Add the data to data set and show the new data added .
In that way , report is not static Paning [drag side by side], it actually is driven by dynamic addition of data with Paning.
Please suggest whether we can achieve it in BIRT.
It is quite urgent for us to take decision for selecting BIRT as Our report engine otherwise custom charting control is only option for us .
Thanks in advance for your guidance !!

Would doing something with chart interactivity work? Like, if they click on the chart, you'd reload the report with the next csv file's data displayed?
Rajan_Arx
Yes. Please suggest how can I achieve it ? ifpossible provide any sample.
Thanks in advance !

Here you go. Take a look at this report. Be sure to change the location of the flat files in the dataSource to wherever you save them to.

Thanks Williams ! It worked.
This is about on demand changing the dataset. I was just worried what should be strategy for making a chart where dataset is very big and it will take time to create chart. Do we have any concept of lazy creation of chart for given dataset.. let say if dataset contain 6k records, is it possible to open up chart by first creating the chart for 1k records and then behind the scene keep adding the data points from data set.
Thanks !

So, you want to be able to run a csv file for the first 1000 records, then be able to drill through to the completed chart that ran in the background?
Rajan_Arx
Yes, quite similar what you told. Only concern that chart may keep expanding behind the scene if I have large data . User can pane the chart once new section keep added.
PLease provide any sample . Thanks for your help !!

I don't have a sample for this, but you might be able to run your report for a subset of your data and in your initialize script, call a java file that runs your report for all the data and saves the output. You could then link from your chart in your current report to this saved output. Just an idea. There might be a better solution.
