CSV emitter

Hi all!

I've been asked to generate a CSV file instead of a XLSX one as an output, given that so far there is no free emitter that could generate XLSX files, and that paying the license for Arctorus emitters is not an option yet. That said, I was wondering if there is any free emitter that I could use to generate a CSV file, or do I have no other option than generating my own emitter to perform this task? If so, does anybody know about any tutorial about creating an emitter?

Edit: I've found this tutorial about creating an XML emitter http://digiassn.blogspot.com/2007/08/birt-writing-emitter.html, does anyone know another one?

Hello again!

I've been trying to create a CSV emitter as an eclipse plug-in as suggested at the link in the first post. However, I can't find the org.eclipse.birt.report.engine.emitter to define the extension's properties needed for the BIRT engine. Does anyone know in which package can I find them or which package to I have to put in eclipse's plugin folder for it to recognize them? I already checked and I have the org.eclipse.birt.report.engine_3.7.0.v20110603.jar in my plugins folder, as well as in the project's buildpath.

BTW the engine should not be in the build path. Do you have all the birt plugins in your plugins folder?

Actually I tried using that plugin but it puts some extra rows saying that it is an evaluation version. That is the reason why I'm trying to create an emitter from scratch. 
 
Also, I realized that is an installation problem, I tried to do the same with another eclipse and it worked fine. Now I wonder which plugins are missing in the one I was using originally. I tried to copy + paste all of the org.eclipse.birt* .jars I found but sadly that wasn't enough. 
 
Back to creating a custom emitter, the only thing that is missing apparently is how to define the emitter's format. I specified it following the instructions in the tutorial but the reportEngine can't recognize it, and apparently birt uses the emitter related to the RenderOption I assign to the task instead of the emitter I define in setEmitterID(<emitter class name>). Do I need to create a custom RenderOption too? Even if I want to create a plain csv text file?

What you may want to try is use the BIRT allinone designer to build the emitter as it has all the required plugins. BIRT depends on other projects as well, You may be missing one of those requirements. BTW have you seen this:

Thats what I did, I had to use the other eclipse and it worked just fine. Also, I could finally create the emitter, apparently the problem was that it wasn't exporting the .jar file in the folder I thought it was doing it so... basically everything was because that file wasn't where needed. Typical 8th layer mistake...
