Report bursting in excel using BIRT
Birtnewbe
I have a BIRT report that needs to generates couple of million records and the end user would like to get the output in excel and they want only 1 million records per tab( anyhow i believe that is the limit of excel) so how do i do tab bursting in BIRT can this be done?

Use excel emitter (native or spudsoft) for the same.

You shouldn't need to write an emitter, just use one of the existing ones.<br />
There is a (slightly out of date) summary of the different emitters available here: <a class='bbc_url' href='

<br />
For an XLS workbook the row limit is just ~65000, so I assume you are planning on using XLSX.<br />
<br />
Three of the available emitters (Tribix, SpudSoft and Native) use the Apache POI library to create the Excel files.<br />
The POI library has two ways to build up the workbook for XLSX - either in memory or streamed to disc.<br />
For a million rows you really want the streamed to disc approach, otherwise you will need a vast amount of Java heap.<br />
The problem is that the streamed approach doesn't support a few features (no mixed text formats in cells is one, and with my (SpudSoft) approach no images either) so it tends not to be used by default.<br />
<br />
If you are happy with the price I recommend looking at Arctorus, if not have a go with the SpudSoft emitter and if you can't get your million rows in memory let me know and I'll add an option to do the streaming approach (which will have limited features).<br />
