Refresh query without refreshing the page

Hello,
I am trying to use checkboxes to get user input and reload my query based on that. I know how to do it with a page refresh. Is there a way to do the same thing without reloading the page? Can I just reload the dataset or something? I mean I do not want to refresh the entire report.

You might take a look at Actuate BIRT and its JSAPI, which allows you to embed report items and parameter components allowing re-submission of parameters without leaving the report output window:
