beforeOpen problems

Good morning, everyone.
I'm having problems getting a report, using JDBC connection on an oracle database, to compile the beforeOpen method code.
My goal is to use incoming parameters to change the SQL query dynamically prior to the Open method being called.
There is a "solution" posted here: http://gregszabo.blogspot.com/2010/08/dynamic-query-in-birt.html
but BIRT tells me that it can't set the string value (01/01/2008) to the parameter. Also, when I try to preview the result set, BIRT tells me that it can't find the method java.lang.String.replace, which causes it to fail on the _bm_beforeOpen() method.

Has anyone successfully built a SQL query dynamically, other than the simple replacement of parameter values into the query?

Is there any way you can attach your report or send it to me in email? I've used the beforeOpen to edit the query many times, successfully.

As for the parameter issue, if your parameter type is a date, you'll need to create the date with new Date(y,m,d). If you're just inserting a date into your queryText string, you'll insert it as a string date surrounded by single ticks. i.e. '2012-06-29'

If you can't send your report, if you can recreate your issue using the sample database, that'd be helpful in finding out where your issue is.
