Is JSAPI, an open source?
Can it be used for BIRT reports deployed using the BIRT deployment kit?
Any basic or simple reference of using JSAPI along with Birt reports would be of great help.

The JSAPI is an Actuate product. Here is a link to the getting started guide, for it. That should help you out. Let me know.

Michael,
Sorry, the link is not working. Kindly provide the alternate one.
Can JSAPI can be used with open source birt reports(free software or commercial one)?

There. I change the link to one step back, in the wiki. Not sure why the JSAPI link isn't working in here, but you'll easily find the correct link on the linked page, above. Yes, you should be able to use open source designs with the JSAPI as long as the BIRT version are compatible.

Michael,
Whether JSAPI can be used in applications other than Acutate?
Is JSAPI can be added in any web applications?

JSAPI is a Javascript wrapper for the Actuate IDAPI web services. It will only work against a Actuate iServer instance. If you have Actuate iServer, you can integrate any BIRT report, regardless of it being open source or commercial built BIRT reports, into a web application. But it does require iServer.
I do have something for open source BIRT REAPI, but it is still in development.

John,
Is there any way to do some kind of interactive features (column sorting, hiding) in the open source viewer using javascript?
johnw
Yes. There are actually a few ways to achieve that functionality.
The easiest is without extending the BIRT engine. You can create a report that has a parameter that will specify a column to sort or to hide. Then, using some BIRT scripting, you can specify a column to sort, or specify a Visibility expression to hide a column. I have an example I wrote up a few years ago.

Your only other option is to write your own custom viewer. This is not an easy process and would require knowledge of BIRT's Report Engine API. If you wanted to have dynamic sorting capabilities similar to Actuates Interactive Viewer, you would need to know how to run a report, and apply sorts to a Report Document (not the source Report Design) in order to alleviate load on the servers. It's not too difficult, but it is time consuming. It's much easier to do this using the first method above.
Option 3 would be to get a iServer license for just Interactive Viewer. I believe you can do this with iServer Express. It's already done for you, and when you consider the price point vs man hours to write your own and maintain it, its not that bad of an option.
