XML files stored as links in the database

I'm connecting to an Oracle Database using Eclipse 3.4.2 (Ganymede) with BIRT report designer Version 2.3.2. I have a column that stores a string, containing a link to an XML file on the server. I was wondering if it's possible to pull the XML data out and include that in my report, alongside the columns I'm extracting with a JDBC connection?

Unfortunately, I can't change my Eclipse or BIRT designer version as the application that interprets the BIRT report design file in the deployment area only works with the versions mentioned above.
