Group task right into a cgi task

Here's what I'm trying to do.

2 users are in a group

They are approvers and they need to "take ownership" of a task...but then I need to kick off a cgi task/script that displays a custom window that shows them some information.

My users are complaining about the number of clicks they have to go through to approve the job.
I'm trying to avoid.
1.) take ownership
2.) complete task
3.) transistion comments
4.) start next task (view window)
5.) complete task
6.) transistion comments

Instead I want to
1.) take ownership
2.) start task (view window)
3.) complete task

any hints?

I'm pretty sure to do what you want (which is completely reasonable) you'd have to write your own workflow application. TeamSite won't allow such things.

I see a couple of feature requests filed for something like this:

38443	ability to specify owner of task as "whoever took ownership of preceeding grouptask"
34124	ability to have cgitask shared by a group

They're essentially two different thoughts on how to provide the functionality being looked for.
As always, please contact Interwoven Support to add your company's name to the list of interested parties if this is something you need (I'd suggest expressing interest in one or the other and not both - that way it becomes clearer as to which implementation strategy is more favored).
I'm pretty sure (though I'd love to be proven wrong) that this functionality did not make it into TeamSite 6

Feature request 42068, filed by Lissa on 7/10/03.

Incidentally, I ended up circumventing the same problem by writing a custom CGI (triggered from an email link) which takes the task using the iwtaketask CLT, uses the TeamSite::WFTask SelectTransition() function to move the (taken) grouptask on, which automatically runs an external task which sets the owner for the rest of the tasks, and then optionally bounces to a transition task CCI. If they go through the GUI, they have to do all the steps still though.

I'm not sure these FRs are the ones you are looking for. Here's the one line description for each. But none are shown to be fixed in any release as of now.

42068- Would like ability to make the CGI task have the same owner as the person who took ownership of the preceding group task.

34121 - TeamPortal for BEA 1.1: New Feature -- "Next" button is redundant on 'My Modified Content' screeen, when there is no modified content.

38443 - DNRs should have the ability to process parameters and alter configuration before deployments are run.

34121 was a typo - should be 34124 - "ability to have cgitask shared by a group".

Typographic error. Thanks to ghoti for pointing out. I needed to find out about 34124 (not 34121).
From the infomation I could gather this is not addressed yet (TS 6.1, SP1). Will add the customer to the list.

The workarounds that I have considered:
1. Add an externaltask between the grouptask and cgitask that will set the owner of cgitask. Simple to implement, however user experience is bad, since immediate="t" won't work.
2. Use iwat trigger to set the owner of the cgitask. Architecturally I don't like this. It seems to be more of a hack to rely on an external process to change task properties.

Anybodys got better ideas ?

The only other "workaround" I can think of is to have the transition to the grouptask be a fork - where it transitions to both a grouptask and an externaltask - the externaltask would "poll" the grouptask until it was taken, and then set the owner of the cgitask and transition to the cgitask (which would have an activation statement waiting for both tasks to transition to it).

I don't remember whether or not doing the transition this way will still allow for immediate="t" on the cgitask to function as desired. If not, you could try having the externaltask transition to the endtask and have the endtask contain an activation statement to require the externaltask and any other legitimate transition to the endtask.

It's still architecturally fragile (IMO) - but I think one or the other approach would work and it's a little bit better than depending on an event trigger.

I did something like this on a project not too long ago - I had a grouptask and a simple iwat trigger script, registered to fire on the event that occurs when someone takes ownership of a grouptask (I forget the exact event string - but it shouldn't be hard to find if you're working with a wft with a grouptask in it). The trigger script had to have the name of the cgitask hard-coded in it - but basically it creates a task object for the task that triggered the script and another task object for the cgitask, and copies the owern from the one to the other.

It worked very well - and is in many respects cleaner than trying to do the forked task thing I described earlier.
