Web CMS (TeamSite)
files and access rights strangely modified by...

Hi everyone,
we're experiencing funny behaviour in some of our TS branches/workareas: even though files have been submitted and deployed by various users after a couple of days the files appear to be edited (that is, the TS icon shows the small pencil) by our master user, when actually this user didn't do anything with the files.
Does anybody know whether the veritas backup software could be the cause of this? Or are there other ideas about what could be the problem?
Also TS recently generates problems when certain users (editor role) try to generate files with TS Templating, saying the user doesn't have the necessary write permissions in the current workarea. However, generating and saving the DCR, as well as previewing the page is possible.
Any suggestions on this one?
I'd highly appreciate any comments and hints.
Tobias

What version of TeamSite (including SP and patches)?
Am I correct in assuming Solaris?
Are you backing up /iwmnt, /.iwmnt, or /default ? or just /iw-store?
What are the area permissions on the branch? on the workarea? on the directory(ies) where the editor is trying to generate the files?
What is the editor's primary group? secondary groups?

If you are on Windows, you might want to check that backup and other software is not running against the Y: drive. Some backup packages will change the archive attribute of files. In many environments, even when I have specifically told the admins not to backup Y:, it somehow becomes re-enabled. If it's not backup, check for other scheduled processes that may be touching files.

As far as the generate error goes, chances are the user has correct access to the templatedata directory (where the DCRs sit), but not the directory where your generated files will be located. Can the users preview? There is an entry in templating.cfg that point to the preview directory, be sure your users have access to that directory.
Good luck

Hi John,
thanks for the advise. However, the backup software we're using (Veritas) doesn't backup the Y: drive. Funniily enough so far it didn't even backup our TS backing store, so it was worth having a look at the backup issue anyway.
However, the problem with files being marked as
edited
didn't show within the last couple of days. So, I'll have an eye on the issue, but at the moment it seems to be fine.

Hi fish,
we're working with TS 5.5.2 (SP1) on WinNT.
Regarding the backup: please see my reply to John.
What do you mean with "primary/secondary group"? The user is member of various local NT user groups, one of them being the group the workarea is shared with and therefore has "Full Control" on all its content. That's exactly what astonished me: The user is able to create a DCR and to preview the page but when he wants to generate the HTML file the error comes up. Seems a bit strange to me.
This specific user group also has "Change" rights on the necessary branch and subbranch.

Promary/secondary groups had to deal with my assumption that you were on Solaris - this is one of the reasons I keep asking people to provide information such as product versions and platform information when they make posts - it's far easier to determine an answer if you know the constraints within which the problem occurs.

Yes, the user can preview the DCR (the preview directory is the workarea's home directory).
Also the user is member of a local NT usergroup that has
Change
rights on the entire workarea. I checked this as well for the two affected directories (DCR location and HTML file location).
I logged in with another user account (who is member of the same local NT user group) and with the same role and could generate the HTML file without any problems. So, I'm kind of confused about this behaviour.
Any further suggestions will be appreciated.
