Removing Null and Blank row from listbox

I am using org.eclipse.birt.report.viewer_4.2.0.v20120611 version of Birt Report Viewer. 
 
I have two issues: 
1) how can i remove a blank and null value from listbox which is coming by default. 
2) If I customize the listbox and provide a value like "--Select Country--" and make this listbox ismandatory=true. 
then it will not show any message for mandatory field because the default value selected is "--Select Country--" and the jsp field is customized to "blank and null value".

This appears to be pretty much the same issue that this devShare post shows a way to solve. Just yours isn't part of a cascading parameter group.

but i already checked that link and implemented the same but that is not working. I have modified the suggested JSP files and restarted the eclipse editor but it is not working. 
 
If this is the most common bug in birt report so why the guys are not fixing this bug because what client want some specific text like "--Select--" instead of null,% or blank value. 
 
Kindly suggest how to overcome this issue.
