Data Set question
Jay1238
Hi,<br />
This is probably an easy one for you guys. But i am quite a newbie and still learning on the fly.<br />
The data source is an xml file. I have a data set named "Test". It has 3 columns from that xml source file. It also has 1 computed column which is derived based on those 3 columns and conditions. That computed column obviously has "repeated" values. Now, i want to create or derive another data set which will just have one column which contains the "unique" set of the above computed column. kinda like select disctinct(column) from table<br />
<br />
<pre class='_prettyXprint _lang-auto _linenums:0'>Result of Test Data set
Col1 Col2 Col3 Col4(Computed)
03 1D 1DX
02 1D 1DX
A 1E 1EY
B 1I 1IY
DA 70E DAH 70EDAHZ
BA 70E DAH 70EDAHZ
Result of "New" Data Set should be like
Col1
1DX
1EY
1IY
70EDAHZ</pre>

You could create a scripted dataSet, using the data from the first dataSet as the source. What are you going to use this new dataSet for? Just for display? If so, you could just make a grouped table. Let me know.

Hi mwilliams,<br />
Thanks for the response. This new data set is not just for display. I will need this dataSet on my main table and crosstab will use that as a filter to nest<br />
<br />
<pre class='_prettyXprint _lang-auto _linenums:0'>data["UniqueService"] Equals To row._outer["UniqueService"] -- this is new dataSet column</pre>
<br />
Can you give me an example of how to create this new dataSet? Or do you want me to email you sample "Test" dataSet?<br />
<br />
Thanks, Jay

Without creating a new dataSet, you could do this with a grouped outer table. You'd simply add a grouping on your Col4. Then, you'd put your nested table or element in the group footer. Let me know if you'd still like to create a separate dataSet, but from the sounds of what you're trying to do, it shouldn't be necessary.

Hi mwilliams,<br />
I quite didn't understand the grouping as i am fairly new. Creating a new dataSet with unique Col4 would help me at this point.<br />
Thanks,<br />

Drag a table to your layout. Bind it to the dataSet that has the computed column. Select the table, by clicking on the "table" tab at the bottom left of the table. Now, right click on the detail row and choose to add a group. For the field to group on, choose your computed column. Select ok and this will create a grouping in your table with a data element for the computed column in the group header. Now, run the report and you'll see that you now have a unique listing of the values.

Thanks Mwilliams!

You're welcome. Now, if you need to pass this value to an inner table, you can put the table or element into the group footer of the outer table and then use a filter or dataSet parameter binding to pass the outer table's value to the inner table.
