Conditional grouping of dates on X-axis

I am able to group a date column on X-axis by weeks, months or years. I need to group the date column conditionally. Say, if a report parameter value is

Months - then the grouping unit should be set to "Months"
Years - then the grouping unit should be set to "Years"

How to achieve this behavior?

In your x-axis, do a case statement and check the parameter value and use the javascript month() or year() to get the year or month.
