Need "get started" for birt charting api

i want to publish birt charts on my website(gwt). i already publish (pivot) tables. so i have the data (pojos) in place i only need some short "get started" documentation/ example how to create an report/chart from within java and export the charts to svg/png.

all documentation i found is strongly focused on wysiwyg stuff (probably i need it later to adjust chart layout/design).

(i already put birt 4.2 in my maven dependencies - but what now?)
