File Comments

All,

I am using an external task to loop through all the file attached to a workflow. Is there a way to access the "Comments" of a file while it is active in a loop. I know I can add a file and put whatever comment I like. What I want to know is if you can do this for a file(s) already attached to a workflow.

Any help would be great!!

You can have a File Comments element in your TAG_info section and then you have all the file comments available in your externaltasks. That's what I do.

Sorry for being a little dense on this, but we don't use File Comments in TAG_Info, is there another way to achieve this. Also, please elaborate how you access the actual comment in the External Task...

Your original post implied that you already had comments for the files already attached to a workflow - how do people enter those comments if not via TAG_info? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are really trying to do.

Sorry for the confusion Smitty.

When we add the files to the workflow with the start task we add a stock comment like "Selected DCR". Then these files are processed by an ET that will do some validation on the files. We populate error messages based on the validation results and then want the error message for each file to be the "new" comment in a usertask.

Does this make sense?

Almost. I'm not sure what the "new" comment in a usertask is. You could do something as simple as creating workflow variables for each file - maybe name the variables to be the prefix of the filename concatenated with _comment or something like that to be able to distinguish them. Then you always have them available to any externaltask in the workflow.
