Server side scripting vs client side scripting in BIRT
RepBIRT
Hi,
In BIRT is there difference in scripting like server side scripting and client side scripting?
If so, kindly give some references or instances of using it.

Can you explain more about what you're asking? Client side script is done in html script tags in an html text box.
RepBIRT
Michael,
Basically what I am looking for is do sorting for table element values.
When we do sorting in html pages generally it will be done in the client side (in browsers). But whether, the client side scripting can be done for the table values.

The general practice in allowing the user to sort, in BIRT, is to drill through to the same report with new sorting parameters. The Actuate BIRT Interactive Viewer has the ability to sort client side. In open source BIRT, you can place a bookmark on your table and then access the table client side with getElementById("bookmark"), which would allow you to access the values in it.

Michael,
If you don't mind, could you provide a sample of it.

The sorting drill through? Or getting an element by ID? What's your BIRT version?
RepBIRT
Michael,
version is 3.2.22
It would be great i you could share provide an sample for both the approaches.
Kindly let me know, is there any benefit by using any one of the approach

The drill through will be much easier. If you don't mind re-running the report, this will be your best option. I've never tried sorting the table by accessing the html of the element. I imagine that way would not be much fun. Attached is an example of a dynamic sort by drill through.

The sorting happens in the sever end. Is there any ways to doing the sorting in the client side. Kindly share your thoughts / ideas on this.
Thanks Michael for sample report.

Yep. This does happen on the server side. You could always use AJAX calls to do it. Something like this:

or this:

Hi Michael...
I did column sorting using drill-through,every thing is working fine but it is server side sorting.
I am using BIRT 3.2.23 open source.
Hey Michael you said,
In open source BIRT, you can place a bookmark on your table and then access the table client side with getElementById("bookmark"), which would allow you to access the values in it.
Is it client side sorting?
How to do it? please help me please..
Thanks

If you set the bookmark of the table via the property editor in BIRT, you can access the table with getElementById("tableBookmark") on the client side. Hopefully this makes sense. Let me know.
