HTTPS and Credentials in XML Datasource

I'm trying to use BIRT Report Designer (4.2) to access an XML Datasource that is on a remote server accessed via https. I am including the access credentials in the value for &XML Data Source File property:
https://username:password@somehost.com/foo/bar

...but the credentials do not get passed

Can anybody shed some light?

You can use property binding to pass along the credentials. First create your data source then create two report parameters one for your username and the second for the password. Go to edit your data source then select property binding.

From here you can use params["Username"] and params["Password"]

Thanks for replying so quickly, but though I'll eventually need to parameterise the user/password for now I am trying to get the basics working and so am happy hardcoding them.

The problem is that the request from BIRT to the datasource server does not include the user/password- so it returns a 401 "unauthorised" response.

No problem! Are you going to need the username and password to be dynamic?

Ultimately, yes - but baby steps - I would like to get it working with hardcoded values first.

Well let me know when you're ready for the next set of steps in your report, it'll be pretty easy. You'd need to use a report parameter to get the username and password and from there you can use it in your script.
