Removing Curly Quotes from TextAreas in MT

We have a dilemma, when users paste content into the summary field, if it's from words we get the curly quotes put in. The curly quotes messes up our encodings and our indexing for our Verity search engine, and they are not rendered properly. I know you can't use FormAPI with the MT datacapture.cfg. Is there any other way of doing some sort of find and replace on these curly quote characters?? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this is the best solution, but if you are submitting your content via a workflow you could add an external task which fires off a script.
This script could process the files in your workflow - examine the extended attributes and for each metadata attribute search and replace on curly quotes.
