There are a lot of example reports in BIRT that you might find useful. Go to Window > Show View > Report and Chart Design > Report Examples. You should then have a tab to the far right of the the property editor called Report Examples. You can then see all of the example reports BIRT comes with. There is an example in there called Sub Report that uses a table. Let me know if you have any questions.
