I've the following xml structure

Now if i try to add the productname or batchno dataset to the table and view the report, I get two pages in the report which is fine, but in each page both the drug data gets displayed. 
Instead i wanted the 1st drug record to be printed in 1st page, 2nd drug record to be printed in 2nd page and so on.. 
Is it possible to do that in any way like using scripting ? I've attached the xml and rptdesign file

I remember this report :-) 
Your report is hard to understand as your column names have no readable names, but I think that the devshare article I posted yesterday might help you. In the download package there is a pdf file. In that file a problem situation is described that I think is much like what you are trying to achieve. It is <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.birt-exchange.org/org/devshare/designing-birt-reports/1563-birt-group-functions-plugin/'>here</a> 
 
In the sample report you'll see three base data sets. 
I think the ds_cost and ds_revenue in my report are like your PMS2-1-Drug and PMS2-1-Reaction data sets and and the ds_customer data set in my report is like your PMS2-1 data set. 
 
Can you take a look at it?

Hi Nithinurs,

If you manage to build that joint dataset that joins the three data sets together, it will sure be possible.
You'll then need to add groups in your table on patient, drug and reaction, put all data in its own header row (no more need for a detail row) and then set a "Page Break After" to Always on the reaction group header.

The main problem is with joining of datasets, as there was no common entity upon which i could join.
will check if i can make any changes to xml structure and try..

Ok, your sitution is not so similar to the one in my devshare post as I first thought.

But you have the patient ID in all three data sets, am I right?

How about this:
- add the ROWNUMBER function to both the drug data set and the reaction data set
- create in both data sets a computed column that concatenates the patient ID + "someDummySringValue" + rownumber
- create a joint data set that does a full outer join between both data sets based on the new computed columns
- create a joint data set that does a inner join between the previous data set and the patient data set on patient ID

Now you can create the table with the groupings.

Now, what if you have multiple patients in your xml's. In that case you can not use the rownumber function, but you will need to use the grouprownumber function from the devshare post, so that the rownumber starts by 1 for each patient.

I tried few things following ur replies, dont no wheather its proper..

First within drug and reaction dataset i created computed columns using GROUPROWNUM function on patient id.
THen i did this step -

- create in both data sets a computed column that concatenates the patient ID + "someDummySringValue" + rownumber

then performed joins like u told , but it didnt work. can u confirm wheather the things i did is right.

I see you have 2 new data sets:
- JDS-PRMS2-1-Drug-React
- JDS-PMS2-1

That's good.
Now you need to build a report with only one table element on it. The table needs to be bound to data set JDS-PRMS2-1.

Right click on the detail row to "Insert Group" on patient id.
Put the patient data in the patient header row if you want it to appear only once, or add it in the drug header (see below) if you want it to appear on every page.

Right click on the detail row to "Insert Group" on drug id.
Put the drug data and the reaction data in the drug header. Use grids to organize your layout, not tables!
Select the drug header row a set the page break after to "Always"

You can remove the detail row, and the footer rows if you don't need them.

I hope this will put you in the right direction.

hi hans, thanks a lot for the solution and quick replies.. It worked in the way which i had required.

But i have one doubt, if there are multiple drug or reaction tags within PMS2-1 tags, this wont work. only first occurence will be printed.
when i followed similar approach using table instead of grid also it didnt work out.
Is there any way to do it ?

Hi Nithinurs,

I'm sorry, I've been too fast and forgot something. It is a very complex report you are working on :-)

You should add another grouping to the table on "reaction" under the drug grouping, and instead of putting everyting in the drug header row, put it in the reaction header row.

Also, I took another look at your report and I see that you have the joins the wrong way.
in JDS-PMS2-1-Drug-React there should be a FULL OUTER JOIN
in JDS-PMS2-1 there should be a INNER JOIN
When you do this, you will get the correct results even when the number of drugs differs from the number of reactions.

hi hans, i'm attaching design and xml file.

If u see it the 2nd drug and reaction data within the 1st PMS2-1 block is being printed in 2 separate pages.
i needed all the drug and reaction contents of one PMS2-1 block to be printed in single page.
is it possible ?

There is just not enough space to put the second drug and reaction on the same page.
You can:
- modify the page size
- choose "auto layout" instead of "fixed layout"
- resize the report sections

I'm using BIRT 4.2.0. viewed it in PDF, doc and webviewer, in all the scenarios its printing in separate pages.
In which view did u check out ?

In web viewer I get everything on 1 page.
In pdf I get two pages, but it is simple: if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit. I'm sure you can think of some other ways to make it fit:
- modify the masterpage margins
- use a smaller font
- reorganize your columns: make some smaller, some larger, so that the data always fits on 1 line
- ...

One of the problem is i cannot change the masterpage layout. i need it to be A4 and landscape. I used the font size as small as 5, but still it didnt work out..
Just to make u sure i wanted crocin and drug 2 within single table in one page, headache and react 2 to be printed within one single table in one page.

I wonder: was I so wrong the whole time, or did you change your requirements along the way. 
 
This is something completely different. The whole idea of having the joint datasets doesn't seem to be necessary. 
You need to go back to your original design where you have two tables within the main table. In the binding section of the inner tables, you push the "Data Set Parameter Binding..." button to bind the inner data set to the outer data set.

hi hans. i should have described more on this i guess. 
 
By 1st drug record i meant entire 1st PMS-1 block like that.. 
sorry once again.. 
 
 
I just created one main table and binded it to PMS-1 tag, then i created 2 tables inside the main table and binded it to PMS2-1-Drug & PMS2-1-Reaction tables. But when i click on datasetparamater binding button for either of the 3 tables nothing is inside that window and edit button is also disabled. 
Is there any problem with what i'm doing ?

Hi Nithinurs,

You need to add a paramter to the inner table's data sets. In your case that would be patient_ID or something like that.
After that, if you push the Data Set Parameter Binding button, you can bind the inner table's patient ID to the outer table patient's ID.

In PMS2-1-Drug and PMS2-1-Reaction datasets when i opened the parameters menu, there was no option for me to include any patient_id tag, there are options for adding only constants and Javascript code.

Ouch, sorry again.
I forgot for a minute that your data source is an xml file.

You can do it with a filter on the table.
First of all, to make life easier give your tables a name, like mainTable, innerTableDrug and innerTableReaction.

Then select one of the inner tables and add a filter.
- Select the patient id from the current inner table
- Select "Equal to"
- Now choose build expression from the combo box and you'll be able to select the patient id from the mainTable table

I had one small query,
When we are using either grid or table, cant we have fixed size cells so that the values of dataset gets displayed one below other without too much of gap.
As of now, the size of cell determines the gap that should be added between each element of cell.
Cant we avoid it ?

If you select a table column or grid column, you can set the width.

I'm creating one table and need to display data which has multiple values

I wanted the size of cell to be fixed like the one in snap shot which contains 3 records inside it.

But if i try to design the table by giving the sizes like given in snapshot, then the 2nd, 3rd records will be added by taking the height of the cell.
