Eclipse Report Design Perspective Problem
Waslap
I am trying to get a BIRT sandpit of the ground but am having some troubles doing so. I am using RHEL5 64-bit, I have downloaded the file eclipse-reporting-juno-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz and use Java jdk-7u11-linux-x64.tar.gz. Eclipse starts up fine and I used the -clean option. When I try to call up the Report Design perspective I end up with a more or less blank eclipse as per the attachment. Where do I start to get to the bottom of this ?

Hi,
did you try to create a report project using the navigator? The views seem to be empty because you start with an empty workspace, so there is simply not a single file to display.
How to create a project:
Simply right click in the navigator view. Select New-->Project..., select Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools-> Report Project. Give it a name in the next step.
After finishing you should see a Folder in the navigator view. Right click on your folder and select new-->Report. After deciding about the file name the new report is beeing opened and you can start working on it. All views will be empty as long as you do not open a report design file.
By the way:
Do not use the -clean. It will erase all settings you ve done earlier.

By the way. There is an old tutorial available. It is a bit outdated but the basic beginner steps are covered quite well:
http://docs.jboss.org/tools/OLD/3.0.0.Beta1/en/jboss_birt_plugin_ref_guide/html/esb_support.html#d0e158
Do not read other chapters then chapter 2.3.x as it will only cause confusion because it is relating to an outdated version
