Birt with Google Maps

The BIRT Online Maps library was updated last week, and additional features were added. When did you last download from ZIP from BIRT Exchange Marketplace? 
 
I'm able to run Addresses sample design successfully in Open Source BIRT 4.2.1 and the latest (commercial) BIRT Designer Professional (11 SP4 Fix1). 
 
You do not need a Google Map API key for running the sample. Please note that "All Maps API applications* should load the Maps API using an API key. Using an API key enables you to monitor your application's Maps API usage, and ensures that Google can contact you about your application if necessary." Thanks for your response.. I m using helios so Birt 2.6.X for 4.2.1 download when you click an option for update as eclipse is already installed it redirects to <a class='bbc_url' href='http://wiki.eclipse.org/BIRT_Update_Site_URL'>http://wiki.eclipse.org/BIRT_Update_Site_URL</a> where latest is 3.7 
 
BIRT Online Maps.rptlibrary size is 27 KB 
 
For web browser in eclipse i tried with both Firefox and IE 
 
It gives me no error but just hangs on Loading map..Please wait.. 
 
Please let me know should i install 4.2.1 all in one,even though i have eclipse?

Yes, please try with the all in one BIRT 4.2.1, or with 3.7.2 since those are the two versions I tested the latest version of the BIRT Online Maps.rptlibrary (27,282 bytes). 
 
Also, if you do see Loading Map... message, do you see the same issue if you run/view in...

Hi,i tried with 4.2.1 and i still get the same problem with Addresses.rptdesign now i might sound stupid asking this question but it has just been few days that i have worked with BIRT,how do i run it in web viewer .I just get Preview option in eclipse. and in that it shows only Loading map . 
 
In my preferences for Web browser i have set Internet Explorer and tried with Firefox too.

Under the menu item Run, select View Report. Then you will see the options for 1 In Web Viewer and 3 As HTML. 
 
Then view the Addresses sample As HTML, right click to View Source and save the HTML. Please post this so that we can check the generated output. 
 
Also as troubleshooting step, does your designer machine have access to the internet, and can access these URLs?

Thanks for attaching your HTML output, and running the URL tests to Google. 
 
I compared my output with the attached and saw a couple differences. 
 
1. In the Javascript library code, your output has escaped ampersands -- "&&". For example, line 53, we see:

where it's supposed to be unescaped ampersands -- "&&":

The symptom you are experiencing may appear to be the same as Sakshi's. However, Sakshi cannot view any of the samples. 
 
Thank you for including your design and generated .rptdocument. It was helpful in debugging your issue. 
 
The location of where you placed the Javascript code to start the Google Maps library is located in the footer of the table. The footer of the table will only be rendered on the last page of your table. Thus, you were seeing the Google Map appear on the last page of the report. 
 
If you move this code out to the footer of the Master Page, you should be good to go.

You might just want to cut the existing (date/time stamp) control in the footer and place a 1x1 grid there. Then you can paste the date/time stamp control in, cut the control with the Javascript from the table's footer and paste it into the grid in the Master Page. 
 
Please note that addresses you are sending to Google Maps API has extraneous information. After the address with the city, state and country, there is a   or an escaped HTML character, followed by the city, state and country again. You may want to correct this. 
 
Example (exact address masked, extraneous in bold): 
xxxxx HADxxxxON, SUITE xxxx HOUSTON, TX 77043 - USA  HOUSTON, TEXAS USA 
 
Please also make a note about geo-coding as stated in the BIRT Online Maps: 
When using Online Map services, there are 2 ways to get a mark on the map. Using an address (this can be a full address, just a state, city, or even an airport code), or using an actual longitude and latitude combination. When using just an address, the item must be geo-coded to get the longitude and latitude point. Online mapping services offer geo-coding services, and this framework attempts to use them, but unless you pay for the service, your requests are throttled, and limited to a small number of requests within specific timeframes. You must note this when using these samples with actual addresses. There WILL BE a delay to render the points on the map, while the addresses are geo-coded. Also note, that Geo-coding, and when free can also be quite fragile. It should only be used as a last resort if longitude and latitude data is not available.

In your sample report, you have over 120 non geo-coded addresses. You need to consider using geo-coding (whether you are going to display in 9 pages in your sample report, or in a single page), or you will be throttled by the number of requests by Google. 
 
In order to display all data in one page, you'll need to have the entire contents of the table in one page. Or if you are using HTML format of the report, you can rearrange the report so that the entire report is rendered and the pins can be added to the map.

It should work either of those two browsers without any changes. It should also work with Firefox without any changes. 
 
Let's take a step back and see if you have any issues with the samples in Internet Explorer? What is the context in which you are viewing these reports (yours and samples) with the various browsers?

I am getting "Sorry, we have no image here" message in IE . Please see attached IE_Vs_Chrome.png file. Does google block maps after reaching certain limit of requests?

I have checked from other machines (Using IE browsers) accessing the same report. Its working fine in some m/c's and showing the same error in other m/c's. Why is it inconsistent?

I have tried one sample report and getting some error to get API key. Please see attched Chrome.png

In the second screen shot, it looks like you are using an older sample that is using the deprecated Google Maps v2 API. 
 
The samples that I was referring to, and the latest BIRT Online Maps.library can be downloaded from the BIRT Exchange Marketplace @

Please setup a new project based on the download from the Marketplace (the download will contain the actual project for you). From there try the Addresses, and Real Estate samples, and you will see the framework in action.

Just to clarify... you tried the HTML file in Msg #10 in your Internet Explorer and was able to see the map? What did you mean by i have "&" there in the html file??? 
 
As Pierre (developer of the BIRT Online Maps library) stated in <a class='bbc_url' href='http://www.birt-exchange.org/org/forum/index.php/topic/28631-birt-with-google-maps/page__view__findpost__p__113576'>Msg #20</a>, it is most likely that you are referencing the old library in your design. Please do as he suggests. 
 
That would explain why my HTML attachment worked in your environment, and your report did not. 
 
If you need assistance in troubleshooting this further even after the project has been imported and the new library is sued, can you go into your designer and view the Addresses sample report as HTML? Then View Source and save the file (and attach it) so that I can see the output generated from your environment?

Hi Clement,

Yes. The issue is specific to IE.

The report is in iServer

1. I am not able to see maps from my local m/c IE browser and able to see in Chrome. See attached View source, IE version details (IE 8), screen shots.
2. Same report from iServer being accessed from other machine and am able to see maps from that m/c. See the screen shots/ View source/ IE details of that m/c too

I don't see any difference b/w view sources and IE versions.

I am not able to see maps from address sample too. I have attached "Addresses_ViewSource.txt" and screen shot from my environment.
