start wf from pt, when preview button is hit

Is it possible to start a workflow from a presentation template? Here is the scenario:
A user is working on a dcr, they then hit the preview button. When they hit preview, the pt will be executed. This pt will actually just call a perl script, which I want to take that dct only, and send it somewhere via opendeploy. I can just do a full directory compare with this method, but this is not efficient. I first thought maybe starting a task in the perl script would do it well, but now the question is basically, how do I get the dcr name/location from the perl script?

Do you really need to start a workflow? Couldn't you just make a call directly from the tpl to a perl script? As far as deploying, couldn't you emergency deploy just that one file, as opposed to full directory compare?

The documentation on the iw_perl tag covers a bunch of perl functions you can use from presentation templates.

Do you have an OD config file set up to accept a filelist, vs. a dir? If you do, you can iwodstart it from the tpl, passing it the above iwpt_get_dcr_name() result as the filelist.

You might be in a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing here - if you're generating a file with the PT, the generated file may not yet fully exist at the time you invoke the deployment within the PT -- also, I'm assuming you want to deploy the generated file (iwpt_get_ofile_name()) either in addition to, or in lieu of the DCR.

To deploy the one (or multiple) file - specifically rather the doing a directory comparison deployment, you would need to create a filelist and feed that into a deployment that expects to be passed a filelist (there's lot of information about this in the manuals and in other threads on DevNet).

You could probably do a slightly delayed deployment with iwodschedadd - but I think you need to be using OpenDeploy 5.6 to be able to pass parameters for the deployment with that CLT.

Another alternative is to have the closing of the created/modified DCR trigger the [prompt for the] invokation of a workflow process, and handle the scripting of the deployment within an externaltask or cgitask of the configured workflow (again see product literature for workflow, OpenDeploy, and other DevNet postings for more info)

Thanks for the input, Actually what I need to do, after drawing everything out,is the following:

1. preview button is hit
2. get the dcr name, and sometimes an associated file, build file list, call iwodstart and use this as the file list parameter( I am only submitting dcrs to a dynamic app that uses the xml files, no generated files in this scenario).
3. start a workflow, because when the user previews this content in the dynamic app, we will let them approve or reject the content( we think via CCI).
4. the workflow we think is necessary to accomplist removing files from the test instance of the dynamic app(in the case of the rejection, which will call open deploy, and use the same file list again to take them out).

So what I am thinking should happen in the pt is to :
get the dcr name, and associated file names, call iwodstart with the file list, and send the files to a perl script to start the workflow.

does this make sense?

If you're going to invoke a workflow after editing the DCR you might as well set up a wft in available_templates.cfg for command 'tt_data' and do deployment / review / "undeployment-if-needed" within the same workflow.

that makes sense, so would I actually just do a command line in the pt that starts the workflow, and give it the wft file name as a parameter? That is probably what I need, a command line reference for this stuff. I will look in the manuals, but do you happen to have an example of this? (initiating a workflow via command line, and passing the file name as well... Smiley Happy

You're missing the point (or I am?) - you don't need to code anything into the PT for this - closing the DCR will initiate the workflow - if you've configured it in available_templates.cfg *and* the DCR is not already associated with a job -- the workflow can generate the pages for you and do the deployments

I know that I have been pushing this quite a bit, but if I called
iwjobc workflowfilename in a <iw_perl> block, would this already have the dcr attached to the workflow?What is been called behind the scenes when the workflow is kicked off?

I hope you realize that iwjobc wants a job specification XML file, not a workflow template (WFT)...?

In TS5.5.2 SP3, there is a new CLT, iwwft_compile.ipl, which might be what you want instead.
