The mavenised BIRT that is:
<dependency>
<groupId>org.eclipse.birt.runtime</groupId>
<artifactId>org.eclipse.birt.runtime</artifactId>
<version>4.2.1a</version>
</dependency>
includes a lot of third party dependencies, including Apache POI, DOM4J and XMLBeans.
These dependencies should be declared in the pom for the main jar, not bundled up with everything else.
The inclusion of these jars prevents users from using alternative versions in a reliable manner.
It may be that the Excel ODA driver is solely to blame (based on it being the thing that brings in POI and XMLBeans and I'd expect even more third party classes if other things were to blame also).
