What is affected by setImageDirectory()?
How can I make sure that temporary files created there will be deleted?

The setImageDirectory is used to store all images for html output because html needs the images to be stored somewhere to reference it. In PDF the images are embedded and therefore do not need to be stored somewhere. Because of the fact that the images belong to the generated html files the engine never deletes them on its own.
Please be aware that removing files from that directory is causing broken links inside the corresponding html files.
