PDF Pagebreak Problems

hi community,

i got the following problem: when i got some short row content followed by a long row content that doesn't fully fit onto the same page, the page breaks before the long row content, resulting in almost blank pages with only one row of text.

here are two examples, the first one is a html table with two table rows. i managed to set the pagebreak using inline CSS on that one to get the desired result.

the second one is a detail view with two block elements in the same column. same thing happens with any combination of grids, tables etc. i believe i tried every possible combination of page breaking settings on these elements without success.

on repeating details this leaves me with loads of almost empty pages. is there any standard way to fix this or some workaround? version is 4.2.2

I've attached an example of one way to get this working. I created a scripted dataset that contains "dummy field" and "LongTextRandom" 
 
LongTextRandom contains a random number of "Test Text 1" or "Test Text 2". I generated the random long text with this.

Then I added LongTextRandom to it's own row in the table and made it invisible. I added a text object below it. I then split the text into two parts with this.

I had to hard code the max amount of allowable characters on the first page to 2000 with this.

This gives me the location of the first space after 2000 characters so I wouldn't split a word. 
 
Then I was able to assign firstGrouping to that text object. Then I set that row to pageBreakAfter to always and set the rest of the split text to a PGV. 
 
The next row calls the PGV and uses it as the value. Since I no longer need to worry about page breaking BIRT takes care of the rest. 
 
Now you should have on your first page of the PDF the dummy field, the short text, and the first section of the long text.

thanks for this suggestion, i'll try to implement it this way. for now i was able to reduce the problem by floating the two texts and wrapping them in an additional grid, which removes most of the white space but not all of it. i'll try to implement your workaround too.
