birt spring integration

I have integrated birt in a maven project,i am using scripted data source in birt, the problem is i start the birt engine and when it goes to filename.rptdesign file in the open method i am calling a java method which gets the data from the db and if there are no records in the db still it calls the fetch and close method and report gets downloaded with no records. can any one please help me where i can restrict the flow from downloading the report and send back a return value from the filename.rptdesign file.
