Data Sources Referencing Variables

I have two data sources, a jdbc:mysql based source & a xml based source. The xml data source uses a beforeOpen script to reset the url using: 
 
this.setExtensionProperty("FILELIST", vars["fullXmlQueryUrl"]);
 
Where the variable fullXmlQueryUrl is built using two other variables (one that makes a time stamp, the other defines the server number to use). 
 
When viewing the "Output Columns", the "Preview Results", or using the data sources in charts EVERYTHING is fine. But when I create a JOINT data set using the xml based data source I get the following error: 
 
Fail to execute sript in function __bm_beforeOpen(). Source:

A BIRT exception occurred. See next exception for more information. 
Error evaluationg Javascript expression. Script engine error: Report variable "fullXmlQueryUrl" does not exist

Reason: 
A BIRT exception occurred.
 
However, if I use the following script in the xml data source's script tab then it does work. I just have to modify the beforeOpen script in multiple data sources rather than parameterize the creation of the urls. (I have many similar but different xml url data sources and parameterizing them makes management of the BIRT report easier.) 
 
this.setExtensionProperty("FILELIST", "<a class='bbc_url' href='http://server07/..."+new'>http://server07/..."+new</a> Date().getFullYear()+"-"+new Date().getMonth()+"-"+new Date().getDate()+"..... etc.
 
Note, with this work around I can make the url have a time relevant to "now" but I can't parameterize the server number like what is desired. 
 
SO, How can I use variables in the "beforeOpen" script of a Data Source that feeds one of two Data Sets that are used to create a Joint Data Set? 
 
Any help is appreciated.

So it's been nearly a month. If anyone can comment as to whether they've encountered the same issue I'd like to know how they dealt with it, regardless whether they found a solution or a different work-around.

Perhaps some stupid questions, why you can't use the property binding to set the url?

First, thanks for the reply. 
I assume you're suggesting I modify my Data Source so that, instead of using the beforeOpen script to modify the URL, I enter vars["fullXmlQueryUrl"] into the XML Data Source File. I tried what I think you were suggesting but it didn't work. As a true newbie the only way I know how to set the XML URL is with the beforeOpen script for the Data Source. Oh, and I'm not hitting a unique path to a xml file. I'm hitting a rest service via the url that responds with xml and since most of what I've read says that the "XML Data Source File" property binding is just that, pointing to or looking for a file which I will never have.

Perhaps i don't get it, but just try to create some reportparameter "fullXmlQueryUrl" with the url as String and then in DataSource -> Property Binding -> XML DataSource File -> params["fullXmlQueryUrl"].value

Again, thanks for the reply. Unfortunatly that didn't work. The data source wouldn't work with out some url in the Data Source ->XML Data Source Connection Properties -> Enter the URL of the XML ... the data:. This is after I created, verified, and entered params["fullXmlQueryUrl"].value in the DataSource -> Property Binding -> XML DataSource File location. When I put the static URL in the url box on the data source properties the data source worked but not with the current date, rather it displayed data, returned by the rest service with dates corresponding to the static URL as opposed to the dates that are CALCULATED by the param.

I did learn something though, I learned how to make a parameter NOT prompt the user when the report is run (check Hidden and or uncheck Is Required).

So this is all even before I try to make a combined data set. I could (and might) try to use the parameter instead of the variable in the beforeOpen script to see if IT is calculated when used by the combined data set.

yes you have to write something in the XML Data Source Connection Properties but when you run the report it will use the value of the parameter if there is a binding. I am using some reports on this way so I pretty sure this is working.
