I am new to perl, but have looked at the documentation and tried several things to just look up a value in a dcr in a perl script. here is the code for reading a dcr that I have:

How do I get the value of <item name="FILENAME">?????

Since you have a number of inline commands in there which may be altering structure, I suggest you look at the DCR rather than the DCT when trying to figure out the syntax for parsing it.

As for using DCRnode - when you first parse the XML you'll be provided essentially a handle to the rootnode for the document.

From what you've posted - I think what you want is:

my $xml = "";
if (open(DCR, "<$dcr_file")){
    local $/;
    $xml = ;
    close(DCR);
}
else { ??? }

my $rootnode = TeamSite:CRnode->new($xml);
my $filename = $rootnode->value('FILENAME');
